Our upcoming Hyper Island Recruitment Tour is coming to Olso on November 7th - Digital Media student Casper Cornelius Roalsvig Vasbotten will be on location.
Just like with Cas, who'll be at the Recruitment Tour stop in Amsterdam, we asked Casper to answer some questions that those who are considering applying for the tour might ask themselves.
What's it like being a Hyper Island student?
I love (almost) every day at Hyper Island. And the far by best thing is all the amazing people there. The great diversity of people from so many different backgrounds, all with an hunger and urge to learn new stuff is simply priceless. I feel this really is the backbone in Hyper Island. My experience is that you learn all the time, and not just in the lectures and workshops.
But it's also important to say that it's tough. Hyper Island is not a school you can surf through. All tough there are no exams or grades, you'll probably gonna have work more than in the regular university course to get through.
However, it's no pro doing all this hard work when your surrounded by 150 amazing and inspiring co-students.
Why should I go to the Recruitment Tour?
You should go to the Recruitment Tour if you wan to have a taste of what Hyper Island is about. I also can guarantee that if you go, you'll learn and experience something new and valuable.
Isn't being interviewed scary?
I wouldn't use the word scary per-say, but definitely challenging. There's probably only one thing to say about it: you cannot prepare for it. The best thing you can do is just be your self, and be honest. That will definitely get you far.
And if you're still scared; we'll do our best to be nice. :)
I'm unsure if I have enough computer/software knowledge to go to Hyper Island. What's your advice?
No worries. There are lots of people at Hyper Island who's not computer-geeks. And you are going to Hyper Island to learn, aren't you? You really don't have to be a HTML God to go to Hyper Island.
But if you really feel that don't have enough of these skills, and still really want to go to Hyper Island, then just start to learn. Open your computer (or buy/loan/find one) and start exploring!
Top three reasons I should go to Recruitment Tour in Oslo?
1. You'll get hands on insight of what Hyper Island really is about.
2. You'll 200% for sure learn something very useful. Probably something about yourself.
3. I'm gonna be there, and I really wanna meet you!
Thank you, Casper!

Apply to the Hyper Island Recruitment Tour at Hyper Island's Recruitment Tour is kicking off on November 7th, making stops in Amsterdam and Oslo.
Cas Lemmens, Interactive Art Director student who will be at the Recruitment Tour day in Amsterdam, answered some questions that those who are considering applying for the tour might ask themselves.
What's it like being a Hyper Island student?
Being a Hyper Island student is one of the best experiences in my life. In the three months I've been here, I learned so much about myself, how I work, how I act in groups and most of all how I can improve myself. Everyone at Hyper is really open, and can't wait to help you with problems you have. Each and every one of the student has a personal field of interest, which brings a great learning experience when you ask them for help.
And beside that you have the parties, gaming contests, daily laughs and unique experiences you'll cherish for the rest of you life.
Why should I go to the Recruitment Tour?
Because the day is just full of new experiences. First of all, you get the chance to meet really interesting people who have the same interests as you but with a different view on it. There's a lot of time to mingle with them, so by the end of the day, you go home with a bunch of new friends.
And secondly, you get a taste of how Hyper Island works, and how it is to study there. It's a small appetizer that gives you a sense of the main dish.
Is the interview scary?
It was one of the most difficult interviews I ever did actually. I didn't know what to expect, and the permanent pokerfaces didn't make it easier. But when you step out of the interview, you realize there is nothing to expect, nor to prepare. You just have to go in and be yourself.
What did you learn at your Recruitment Tour day?
The best thing about the Recruitment Tour were the other attendees. I met people from all around the world, and by the end of the day I knew a lot more about different cultures and countries. It was nice to meet those people, and you got a feeling how it would be to work in group with different cultures.
What have you learned from working with students from different countries?
It's very rewarding. You handle problems a lot more efficient since you see it from many different perspectives. And the creative process becomes a lot richer. You get inspired by stories, pictures, experiences that your friends will share. It's probably the most attractive thing of Hyper Island, in my opinion.
I'm really interested in Hyper Island, but I'm unsure if I have enough computer/software knowledge. What's your advice?
Hyper Island does not expect any great computer/software knowledge at all. They focus on group dynamics, and being a good leader. You work on several projects, every time with a different group. And the more diverse the group is, the more exciting the project will be. People who have a good computer knowledge are handy, but certainly not the only thing that is necessary. We need copywriters, actors, clothing designers, music specialists, sport fans, happy cookers, ... you name it! Any field of interest will come in handy what so ever. Be proud of what you know, it will be handled with all the respect it needs!
Top three reasons I should go to Recruitment Tour in Amsterdam?
1. You'll meet very interesting and awesome people.
2. You'll get a small taste of what Hyper Island has to offer you.
3. You'll just have a great day and a unique experience.
Thank you, Cas!

Hyper Island's Recruitment Tour made a stop in Berlin last week. Hyper Island staff member Christian Olsson tells us more:
What was the purpose of going to Berlin?
We went down to Berlin mainly to do the recruitment days and meet potential students as part of our recruitment tour. Also we met exciting agencies and people who are all interesting to be connected to Hyper Island in the future.
The recruitment day consist of several different acitivities to get a broad and as correct picture of each applicant as possible. Each year, we don't look for one type of person when we assess applicants. Instead we try to find a dynamic group of students with different backgrounds and skills. A recruitment day consist of a personal interview, an individual creative test, a group test and an English test. Also, you have the chance to meet previous students talk to Hyper Island co-workers to clarify questions.
We had the great opportunity to spend our recruitment day at Neue Digital's very nice offices in the centre of Berlin. Read more about Neue Digital here.
What's your impression of the digital industry in Berlin?
Berlin is one of the creative centers in Europe for art, music, design and other creative industries. As a natural part of the city, the digital industry has really happened. A lot of global agencies have a creative office in Berlin and there are many smaller design studios like URBN.de and Less Rain. I think more Hyper Island students should go to Berlin for their internship or after graduating.
What can Hyper Island offer international students that they could not find in their home countries?
According to the industry, there are not a lot of schools that are similar to Hyper Island in the world. We get contacted daily from top agencies around the globe who want to employ our students. We believe that it's because a unique mix of the Hyper Island learning method, which is based on active participating, problem-based learning and learning-by-doing in combination with cutting edge technology used for implementing change together over 400 external industry lecturers each year. Since the start in 1996, Hyper Island has had an international perspective. A big part of the Hyper Island students get employed and do their internship abroad and a lot of the lectures are in English. To put it short, I believe it's the combination of the above.
We look forward to the upcoming Recruitment Tour stops in:
· Austin, Texas - 15th of March
· Helsinki - 21st of March
· Oslo - 25th of April
· Lisbon - 10th of May
Apply for the upcoming Recruitment Tour stops here!
Thanks Christian!

Hyper Island staff member Roger Sjögren and a Hyper Island student completed Hyper Island's Recruitment Tour stop in Kraków last week. Besides meeting potential students, Roger held a lecture at Jagiellonian University for both students and the Polish digital industry.
We caught up with Art Director Michal Ozorowski and New Media Designer Maciej Mlynek, both at Grupa PTR, who helped set up the lecture to find out what's going on in Poland.
What's going on digitally in Poland?
Michal:
Polish agencies are using more and more rich media. It looks like clients at least trusted in the power of motion design, video and unconventional methods of comunication. Now they see how important is buzz in nowadays mass-media.
Corporate blogs are still alive. Many of companies uses them to keep in touch with customers. Our digital world at least understood that new media is not just about nice pictures but it needs to be very comprehensive while working with clients.
Many digital agencies takes over tasks of classic creative agencies. It's because customers can see that they know that enviroment much better and they know how to use their tools more effectively.
Also many people noticed how strong a non-intrusive marketing can be and that internet is the best platorm to use it. 2008 was a good year for TV stations, few of them started their internet broadcasts. Even public television provides many programs over internet.
Most people who works in new media are young, so it's their first working experience. That means that they - we - have to learn a lot about life outside digital world. We've got here cult of working in small creative studios.
How does Hyper Island's type of education match the interests of digital creatives in Poland?
Maciek:
I think many creatives - if they still study - look for an up-to-date school where they can develop their skills and learn something new. Digital media industry is very specific because - as Michal mentioned - people start their work while they're pretty young, often before they start to study. So many times they don't study to find job - because they already have it - they study to get a "paper". I know that it can make people frustrated.
I think that Hyper Island is the right answer for this kind of demand. This is the place where you can learn beside people from top agencies around the world, and more - education is not aimed at teaching you computer programmes but more at teaching you how to communicate with other people. I think it teaches you this business in a very creative way. For me, good thing is that is only one or 2 years ;)
Michal:
As a head of digital agency I can tell that we haven't got enough of creatives who understands all aspects of that work. That's why HI experience would be very valuable for them.

Why did you arrange a lecture at Jagiellonian University?
Maciek:
I wanted to make the most of your coming to Kraków. I am an initiator, organizer and host of the meetings called "Witajcie w realu" ("Welcome to reality") that actually are inspired by your school. Almost once a month (from May 2007) during academic year we invite people from the industry to give a lecture about chosen subject. From the beginning it was my dream to invite you and arrange such meeting, also for professors to come and be inspired. Actually, I have only sent the invitation to my faculty's secretariat but thanks to my friend, one professor from Kraków's Academy of Arts attended the lecture. I don't know about this professor but I know other people were inspired by the meeting.
I can say that my dream came true. I personally hope that it will be one of the factors for making our digital media education better.
What do you think the lecture attendees learned about Hyper Island that they may not have known before?
Michal:
That it's not so easy experience as it seems. That being there is hard and sometimes frustrating work. And that Hyper Island is not about design (i think that many of attendees before lecture thought that HI is some kind of design school).
Maciek:
Similar to Michal, I think the attendees (including me) learned that Hyper Island is - as I wrote before - not only a design school but it lets you know more about yourself, teaches you character and how to communicate within the group.

Why do you personally like Hyper Island so much that you decided to get involved with our visit in Poland?
Maciek:
I can say that me and Hyper Island met each other somewhere in 2003 ;) I found the Crew 7 site first and from it I found your website. I was 19-years-old that time, I have started my design career as a 15-years-old rookie. Hyper Island looked as a perfect place to study. Excluding the fact that the studies were only in Swedish, there were few other reasons that I haven't decided to apply. That time it was more like a dream than a real decision: "yes, let's do it".
The passion have endured and Hyper Island is still my ideal educational institution. That's why I didn't hesitate a while to write to you and actually in some way persuade you to come to Krakow rather than to Warsaw (forgive me, friends from the capital!).
What do you hope to see in the future for digital work in Poland?
Michal:
More confidence from clients and bigger budgets. Rest is in our hands :)
Fulfilling of those conditions will allow us even to send our people for training in Hyper Island!
Maciek:
I hope that we will have more and more creative and high quality works and that clients will trust the agencies more which will be a benefit for both sides.
We really have many creative talents over here, so if some of them study at Hyper Island, be sure they come back ;) It would be also great to have some Hyper Island students doing internships in Poland. You're all invited!
Thank you Michal and Maciek!
One of the attendees has written about the lecture on his blog.

I have been a part of Hyper Island for two and a half years now. Two years as a student of the Digital Media Program and half a year as a co-worker with the title Project Manager. The fuel that keeps Hyper Island running is based on passion, ambition, lots of magic and lots of trust. That’s why I, as a former student and co-worker for less then 6 months, could be trusted with the assignment going on a Recruitment Tour. The assignment to represent Hyper Island and evaluate and recruit potential students and provide our current students with the chance to evaluate their internship so far.
When Chiefs Executives, Projects Managers, Creative Directors, Designers and Developers asked me "How can our agency get closer to your students", I feel so inspired and happy.
For some reason, our students are able to become a part of agencies almost instantly after arriving. They generally understand the culture of the agencies and their new co-workers pretty instantly. They understand what the assignments require of them and they take it very seriously. Many agencies find the students trustworthy with deliveries to real clients. And there are also a lot of trust being built on the knowledge that the students are taking responsibility for asking for help or clarification of assignments when necessary.
I started to really think about what my co-workers and I do… seriously!
My conclusion of the secret of Hyper Island is this…
Trust really makes people grow, inclusion is necessary in order to create passion and commitment, clear communication of needs and expectations provide safety, understanding and respect. Bravery is what you need to speak about your fears, and you need to feel worthy to be able to claim your right to fulfil your needs.
But what we really do, our secret, is that we work with our students and guide them, challenge them, so that they become brave and realize that they are just as worthy.
All my love to Hyper Island for inspiring people to be cutting edge within digital and interactive media.
