Hyper Island's Business Management 2009 students graduated earlier this month. Congratulations!
We caught up with newly graduated Charlotte Hagefors and Frida Öhrman who told us more about their experiences at Hyper Island.
Frida: The examination week was an amazing week! So nice to meet everybody again after almost half a year. When we see each other we always have something to talk about, it feels like we last met each other yesterday. I know these people better than I know my oldest best friends!
Biggest learning experience at Hyper Island?
Charlotte: My biggest lesson learned is my self-understanding.
Thanks to especially UGL, process weeks and several personality tests, I have come to know new sides of myself that I will be of great help in the future.
Frida: I've learned so much about myself that I always can use in every possible situation. I've grown as a person, I understand myself in a better way, know about my strengths and weaknesses. I feel strong, self-secure and safe with myself! Like my classmate Sofie said, "you have grown from a little girl to an awesome project manager!"

What's the best thing about Hyper Island?
Charlotte: You work in real exciting projects. And it's ok to fail. You also get an incredibly large network and in contact with several exciting industries.
Frida: The absolutely best thing about Hyper Island is the unusual learning methods, that we work in real projects with real customers - learning by doing, trial and error! The personal development, to work with a lot of feedback, and that there is two long periods of internship. The education is close to the real work life and the step out into the work life doesn't feel big but natural.
What's been your biggest challenge?
Frida: During the Final Project I had a break down and got a depression. I think it was the result of to many big changes in my live during short time, moving around a lot, studying, doing my internship, and working during summer. That, together with a very difficult final project with a troublesome customer was too much for me. I was very open and honest and told my group about how I felt, and we solved it in a good way, me working just half days. In the end, the result of our project turned out great and I'm very proud of it!
Charlotte: My biggest challenge was to find out what I want to work with in the future.
What’s been the most fun at Hyper Island?
Charlotte: I have many fun memories from Hyper Island. I have met so many wonderful and inspiring people.
Frida: The absolutely most fun during my time at Hyper Island was spending time with my lovely classmates. We spent a lot of time together and had a lot of fun, both during the days in school, and in evenings and weekends, cooking and eating dinners together and party a lot of course!

Do you have any advice for future Business Management students?
Charlotte: Be yourselves and dare to bet on what you want to do. Put your goals high.
Dare to fail.
Frida: My advice for future Business Management students is to dare, dare, dare! The more you give from your self the more you will get back. Be open and honest to others and to yourself, challenge yourself and go outside your comfort zone. And take care of your relationships with all the wonderful people you will get to know during the way, and keep contact with them even after your education!
What’s happening next?
Charlotte: I now look forward to work as production manager on the event and communications agency Bodén & Co in Stockholm. I did my last internship there and now I have employment. It feels wonderful to get to work with exactly what I want to do right now.
I will miss many of the school, but feels great to be back at work after 2 years of study.
Frida: Now I'm looking forward to finally start to work. After studying at the university for three years I felt insecure and didn’t know what I wanted to do, but after two more years at Hyper Island it feels completely natural to start working, I'm really ready for it!

A postcard from Ronja Gustavsson who won #3 place in 48h, the biggest advertising contest for students in Sweden, on March 28th, 2009.
Yeah! 48 hours of frustration and thoughts.
- What do we do?
- Ahh, a tree?
Ohh the clock is ticking... 32 hours left.
- A shovel!
- Shovel? what are we talking about?
20 hours left...
- Yes, we like shovel. It reminds me of a hobbyhorse.
18 hours left...
- Hmm image? Maybe. No.Yes.No.Yes.Maybe.NO!
Three hours before the deadline the printer did not work and the paper was stuck. When our copy finally came out and was to be cut, the cutter angled.
After an attempt to cut to print on a TREMBLING hung-over hand, we were finally finished!
Lovely! It was a very good experience and I want to thank my two group members:
Petter Nylind, Forsbergs and Ines Cuvelier, Berghs. You Rock!

Business Management students' project for curing children's cancer
0 comments Posted by org at 3:41 PMBusiness Management 2009 students Peter Hagander, Frida Öhrman, Rasmus Bjurström and Michaela Modig are currently finalizing a Final Project created for Barncancergalan (Childrens' cancer gala), taking place at Nalen in Stockholm on December 22nd.
The group has created a marketing campaign named "Perspective - 29 days", which combines digital and physical marketing with the aim to bring attention to the importance for all children to be able to be happy and playful - including those with cancer.
The campaign includes guerilla marketing; golden ribbons with messages, like the one above, have been placed all over Stockholm, web marketing such as users being able to connect to the campaign on Facebook (in Swedish), radio spots as well as commercial film which will air on Swedish TV8 during the weeks of December 8th and 15th.
The commercial film is made by Therese Larsson and Markus Gustafsson, both Digital Media 2010 Karlskrona students.

This week, the group can be found on Medborgarplatsen in Stockholm. Visitors can find out more about the purpose of the gala, as well as donate money directly to Barncancerfonden's (Swedish Childhood Cancer Foundation) research to cure children's cancer.
The group's work has already attracted attention, an interview can be heard 8.30 minutes into a P4 Blekinge broadcast here (in Swedish).
"It feels as though we, together with all the other contributors and distributors, have gotten a chance to really make a difference through this project", Project Manager Peter says.
Inspiration for us all!

Goodby Silverstein & Partners, who visited Hyper Island this fall, have been named "Agency of the Year" by prestigious industry magazine Ad Age. In an interview in the magazine Rich Silverstein said the following:
We used to recycle talent from Wieden [and] Chiat -- a mutual-aid society of creative professionals," says partner Mr. Simpson. New hires include a rapper known on YouTube as Jelly Donut, a car expert who Mr. Goodby says knows almost everything about every car that's ever been on the market and a founder of an improv group called Killing My Lobster. It also includes students from Sweden's Hyper Island digital-media and management school, where one of the agency's recruiters, Zach Canfield, went to teach a class to get to know prospects before hiring from a résumé.

Elin Johansson, a Business Management student report on their latest module, concerning their final project:
Business Management 06 finished ten weeks of our final project. During these weeks the focus has been on creating innovative ideas, finding new concepts and carry through with them. We have used a lot of our knowledge from our first year in school.
Research, trend analysis, budgeting, marketing plan and SWOT are some examples of these things. While we have practiced what we have learned we also got a lot of new knowledge. We have searched for new information, referenced interesting books and met many inspiring people on our way to broaden our networks. For many of us these ten weeks have been the final piece in the puzzle. We have measured our strength and feel ready for what is to come.
We celebrated the end of the final project by having an exhibition where we wanted to inspire our guests with our projects. 800 square meters was filled with show cases of our work, interesting companies, speakers, lots of visitors and tons of food. We all stood there very proud of our projects. These ten weeks have been filled with hard work, ups and downs, confusion, frustration, happiness and funny moments. When walking around and looking at each others projects it felt so amazing how much you can do in just ten weeks.
A lot has happened since we started school one and a half year ago. Time has flown away and soon it is time for our last internship. We all feel a bit nervous but also very excited to take the final step into working life. You will find us in all kinds of positions, from project consultant to CEO assistant. We will be at all types of workplaces, from advertising agencies to telecom companies. We will be in big towns, small towns and other countries speaking Swedish, English, Norwegian and German.
What we all will have in common is our motivation to always make things better, not settling for "good enough", with a passion for leadership and eagerness to learn more.

Hyper Island started in 1995 when Jonathan Briggs, David Erixon and Lars Lundh met during a project involving a CD-rom production. They soon realized the increasing need of a different kind of education involving industry based learning, for the growing new media industry. The first long term program at Hyper Island started in Karlskrona 1996 with 32 students.
Since the start in 1996, the pedagogic of Hyper Island has been a true success. After ten years in Karlskrona, we are happy to announce that Hyper Island is about to expand and open up a new branch in Stockholm from August 2007.
- Digital Media will be divided between Stockholm and Karlskrona. Stockholm will concentrate on local businesses, both regarding guest lecturers and internships resulting in employment. Karlskrona will focus on international lecturers and internship placements and will for the first time accept non-Swedish speaking students. 85% of our Digital Media students get job offers before graduating!
- Interactive Art Director is a 1-year design specialization for established designers. A 13 week internship placement is part of the education, giving students an invaluable opportunity to evolve and advance in the business in a short period of time!
- Business Management is a two year AVET (Advanced Vocational Eduation & Training) program, graduating students for a future career as managers. The main focus of the program is to educate students to meet the upcoming needs for modern and visionary management in companies, organisations and projects. The program is located in Karlskrona, with students going on a 17 week internship at the business type of their own choice.
In total over 260 students study full time at Hyper Island each year.
