"For the last 5 weeks we’ve been doing ‘Specialization part 2′ at Hyper Island. A module where the class divides up in different specializations (Technology, Management and Design) and gets special assignments for each specialization.

We (design specialization) got a very interesting brief from 3 young Swedes that had a dream to produce jeans in North Korea. They had an incredibly well documented story and both an interesting and unique concept. Our brief said to design a graphical profile, web concept, launch strategy as well as package design for a future perfume and the launch strategy behind it.

Quite the brief – and with only 4 weeks of production it seemed like we were in for a real challenge!"
, writes Digital Media 2010 Karlskrona student Ole Martin Kristiansen.

"Visual Crook(s) [viso-al kr_oks] a person, or multiple persons in a crew, trying to make the world a prettier place with vicious plans of global domination", says the Digital Media 2010 Karlskrona class who released their site Visual Crooks, as well as a making of blog a few weeks ago. We previously blogged about the class' pre-release site releaseusnow.com.

The students continue;
"Designers, programmers and project managers are divided into different areas of the prison. Every student have got their own cell and prison character, including psychos and mobsters. When scanning the prison the visitor gets an oversight of the locked up inmates, and can click on them to interact, read info and contact them. Watching the prisoners on distance is, however, scary. Do you dare taking a closer look?"

"(...) the 43-strong class put the site together in their spare time, overseeing every element of the project from concept and design to hunting down sponsors. Combining Flash, 3D work, video footage and 2D designs, the interactive site layout depicts a prison, housing students of different specialisms in separate wings that the visitor can explore, with each individual student having designed their own character and cell."
"(...) it's definitely worth checking out"

"Four students. Five days.
We have incarcerated four of our classmates in the cells at Kronohäktet in Karlskrona. The best thing about it... YOU can interact with them. We will post assignments for the prisoners at www.releaseusnow.com and if they are successful we will increase their standards of living. You can follow the live webcam feed from the website."

So says the class of Digital Media 2010 Karlskrona. They have imprisoned four of their classmates and you can follow the whole experiment at www.releaseusnow.com!

Digital Media 2010 Karlskrona students are currently focusing on the specialization of their choice; design, management or technology. Mathias Olofsson has chosen management as his specialization, and is currently in Amsterdam with six of his classmates on a shadowing assignment. Mathias tells us more about the assignment and how he found Hyper Island:

My Hyper Island story started in Australia actually, I was doing a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design at the University of the Sunshine Coast. During my second semester I had a German design teacher who asked me if I had heard about Hyper Island before going to Australia. So in a way I had to go across the world to find out about the school that is 2 hours away from my hometown! So I applied from Australia and went home for the recruitment days and a couple of weeks later I got the e-mail that said I had been accepted, happy days!

I am doing the Project Management specialization at Hyper Island and I am currently at Sid Lee in Amsterdam doing a work shadowing assignment, which means I am following a Project Manager around here to see how they work both internally at the agency and externally with clients and other agencies. After being here for a couple of days I have totally fallen in love with the atmosphere and the people here. The little Sid Lee collective shop right next door is awesome and the blackboard wall café is just a great idea. Every couple of weeks they get a local artist to come in and draw a piece of art all over the cafeteria walls which are made of a blackboard surface, so here artists create masterpieces with a piece of chalk. Guests can make their own little art pieces in the bathrooms. So after being here I am tempted to apply for my internship here, Amsterdam is a beautiful city and the atmosphere is just amazing.

What Hyper Island has given me the most is the ability to see challenges instead of obstacles, meaning that I critically and analytically try and solve problems instead of regarding them as obstacles to hard to get around. Instead I view them as a challenge I will learn something from. Of course learning how to give and accept feedback has been a huge part of the learning experience as well.

When I am done at Hyper I would like to work being a Project Manager, working with group dynamics and the client/agency contact is something I like doing. And the feeling after a big project you have led is finished is just great. Seeing people work on a project with a huge amount of energy just keeps yourself motivated to go on.

If you are a self-managing person, or want to be, Hyper Island is a great opportunity. Digital Management is a two-year long experience you go through with a lot of stress, frustration, and of course good times too. After two years, if you have managed to reach your learning goals and expectations, you will be ready for the work environment in a totally different way than any other education can prepare you.

Thank you, Mathias!

KARLSKRONA

Hyper Island's 2010 students have been playing soccer on Sundays from 7.30-9.00PM throughout the fall. You can follow the team on Facebook.
As the winter approaches the days are getting shorter and colder, the soccer practices have been saved by moving into a rented indoor field at Chapmanskolan in Karlskrona.

The team members, who call themselves 'FC Hyper Island'. Those interested in joining the team or show fan appreciation can get in touch with Linus Larsson or Åsmund Naes , both Digital Media 2010 Karlskrona students.

STOCKHOLM

Peter Jonasson of Digital Media 2010 Stockholm tells us about the class' team:
'Stockholm HISCORES' is Digital Media 2010 Stockholm's cream of the crop (or who ever want's to play). We played Digital Media 2009 Stockholm twice. We tied the first game, but lost the second (it was a real exciting game). Now those bastards are on internships so we aren't able to face them again. When it comes to keep in shape, soccer is a great way to do that. Chasing a round thing all around a field trying to get it inside a reqtangle with a net. Allthough we never practice we give everything every game. Most of us hang out in the gym instead, to prevent sore backs and to be able to look like real dudes when we hit the beach in 2013, or 2019.

When the new class of '11 start here next year we are going to play better than ever. If the Karlskrona bunch are going to Stockholm sometime soon we will also show them who is the kings and queens of the fabulous game of soccer And anyone else for that matter. We are always on stand-by to play anyone who dares to face The HISCORES. C'mon!

We have a feeling a Digital Media 2010 vs. Digital Media 2010 match will be coming up!

Hello Therese Larsson, current Digital Media student in Karlskrona.

How did you find Hyper Island?
I found it through a friend who had a brother who had attended Hyper Island. So it was a long way around, by word of mouth.

Why did you choose Hyper Island over other schools?
Because it was something different, and that I had heard it was not like a regular school with ordinary teachers and homework, but with seminars held by business professionals as well as different types of projects. Of course I wanted to try it.

What module are you working on now?
Experience technology, which has proven to be a rather demanding but fun module!

What have you learned so far?
I have evolved as an illustrator, but also been introduced to some new areas such as motion and tech. But I think I've grown more as a group member than anything else.

If someone asked you how you learn at the school, how would you explain it?
It's very difficult to explain, I think it has to be experienced in order to be fully understood. Sometimes I forget that we have co-workers, because most of the time the students rule the school. It's more like a workplace, or an internship, or why not a collective.
I think I would describe Hyper Island as a place where you seek out the information rather than get it served on a silver platter.

Thank you Therese!
